If you’ve never used an epilator before, you and I need to talk.

I had never used one before this past weekend, but my life (or at least my personal grooming habits) have been changed forever. I came across them online by chance and had never heard of one, but the review I read was enough to make me fork over $50 at my local Ulta for the Braun Silk-Epil Soft Perfection Epilator.

The hair on my head may be fine, but the stuff that grows on my legs and under my arms is coarse, dark and wiry – the last thing any woman wants. On top of that, I have super-pale skin and when I shave, you can still see the dark hairs in the follicle beneath the surface. I’ve combated it with waxing in the past, but that gets expensive and having to show up to appointments in inconvenient for almost everyone.

The answer: epilators. As best I can explain them for someone that’s not familiar, they’re like electric shavers, except that their heads are covered with whirring tweezer heads that open and close rapidly as you move them over your skin. They remove the hair at the root (well, most of the hairs – some of them break at the surface, just like with waxing) instead of at the surface, which produces a waxing-like result that leaves your skin smooth and hairless much longer than shaving.

Also like waxing, hair grows in lighter and softer as you get used to epilating, and using the machine becomes less painful. For what it’s worth, however, I find epilating less painful than waxing since the tweezers do a great job of only hitting the hairs instead of ripping at your skin like wax often does.
